Allard has done well, let’s vote for Strickland

Dear Editor,

We are called upon to decide who will represent us in the United States Senate. This is the highest elective office we can fill except for the presidency, so it is important that we vote by Nov. 5.

We are caught up in a campaign of partisan politics which might discourage us from voting for this highly responsible position, but we should recognize the campaign for what is it really is. Partisan politics can be mean and belittling.

We have two fine, upstanding, intelligent men representing their parties who, for some reason are engaging in a contest with charges and counter charges that are as vicious as a fight between two junkyard dogs. This is unfortunate because neither man is the kind of person to act like this in public. One man has credibly served for 12 years as a congressman and senator. The other seeks office based upon a successful practice of law and public service as a U.S. attorney and on various important state boards and commissions.

A president is limited to no more than eight years in office. That is adequate for the president, then it is reasonable to consider a maximum term for our legislators. Twelve years is far from enough.

Senator Wayne Allard has served for twelve years in Washington and deserves our respect and thanks. We should ask no more from him, even though he is willing and anxious to continue.

Let’s practice the policy of fair play. Let’s call upon Tom Strickland to demonstrate his intelligence, abilities, skills, and aspirations. Give him a chance to serve as one of our U.S. senators.

Be sure to vote.
