Alleged abduction attempt at River Valley Ranch may be misunderstanding, police say

Carbondale police on Tuesday released details of what could have been an attempted kidnapping at River Valley Ranch on Saturday. Carbondale police chief Gene Schilling said officers at the police department received the report at 11 a.m. Saturday that a man tried to coax a 9-year-old boy into his car at the subdivision on the south side of town. Schilling said the man’s description suggested he was wearing a magician’s hat and he had a long goatee-type beard that hung down to his chest. His vehicle was described as a red Jeep Cherokee sport utility vehicle. Schilling said that while police are concerned about the alleged kidnapping attempt, there is some evidence that points to the incident being a misunderstanding. Schilling said when officers questioned the boy, he mentioned that the man looked like a friend of his parents. Carbondale police also put an “attempt to locate” out to all of its officers, as well as those in other area departments. In response to the possible kidnapping attempt, Carbondale police plan to show the town’s school kids “Danger Stranger,” a program that alerts kids to be aware of the dangers of kidnapping. He also said if another incident like this is reported, he’ll use Reverse 911 to warn area residents of the possible threat.Contact Greg Mass: 945-8515, ext.
