Alternative transportation drives local elementary school students

Staff ReportPost IndependentGlenwood Springs, CO Colorado

Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) is inspiring our future leaders to increase activity in their daily lives by encouraging them to ride their bike, take the bus and to walk with a purpose to promote health, safety, physical activity, and a concern for the environment. Each year RFTA sponsors “Alternative Transportation Week” in our local elementary schools to encourage students to use alternative transportation to commute to school and after-school activities. RFTA chose the first week of October to coincide with the much celebrated “International Walk to School Day,” which is held on Oct. 5.Participating elementary schools asked students to count the number of trips they took each day without using a car. Classes who logged the highest use of alternative transportation won pizza parties and other great prizes.Alternative transportation plays a vital role in our community, and RFTA wants to thank all of those who participated, and especially teachers and parents who made this event such a success. You are making a difference in our community and our planet while you save money, get fit and create a more enjoyable life. For additional information on Alternative Transportation Week, please contact Sabrina Harris at (970) 384-4864 or email sharris@rfta.com.
