Amazing Megan

Dear Editor,

I was disappointed with the girls track and field article that was printed on Tuesday, March 26. The dedication and commitment only a few girls showed by traveling to Fort Collins on their last few days of spring break was pushed to the side. The idea that these girls have the confidence and the talent to compete against a field packed with state competition is remarkable.

My frustration lies in a single athlete’s recognition, however. Her name speaks for her alone. She’s well known for her impressive academics, her unique style of basketball, and her untouchable speed in track and field.

Her name: Megan McKinnie. I know that I do not stand alone when I make the statement: She is the type of athlete that everyone strives to be. I know that I speak for my coaches and for my fellow teammates when I say I feel lucky to have her as a part of my team. She has the type of personality that makes others strive for perfection on a daily basis. Her year-round dedication in the weight room combined with her year-round passion on the court and track has set her in a league of her own.

Last weekend at Fort Collins, Megan made her mark running one of the most challenging races in the sport, the 300-meter hurdles. Her second-place finish, to one of the most elite and decorated athletes in track and field, in a time of 47.41 seconds qualified her for the 2002 Colorado State Championships that will be held later in May. To qualify for such an event is amazing, but the catch is how quickly she succeeded this season.

She is an amazing athlete who shows her true grace on and off the track. I invite the town to watch her compete during the Demon Invitational, and to keep your eyes out for more articles about her success. Something tells me this is only the beginning of her climb to the top.
