Glenwood Springs Garden Club meeting

Glenwood Springs Garden Club will be meeting at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Sunnyside Retirement Center, 601 21st St. in Glenwood Springs. The program is “Languishing in Lavender” to be presented by Sharon Andersen, Jan Fedrizzi and Suzie Carlson. Guests are very welcome and should call 945-5353 if interested in completing a lavender project. The business meeting will include a review of the club’s recent GWS 2014 Garden Tour, “Welcome to Our Gardens,” and plans for future community projects.

Community Food Drive

This summer Community Banks of Colorado is sponsoring a Community Food Drive in partnership with Music on the Mountain and extending the opportunity to collect food for LIFT-UP. All nonperishable food items will be donated to LIFT-UP, the local Roaring Fork Valley food pantry, to help stock its shelves.

Food will be collected at the Banking Center in Glenwood Springs (1810 Grand Ave.) and Rifle (707 Wapiti Ave.) locations through Aug. 16. Bring by anything you can spare from your cupboards or grab something extra when at the grocery store to help the community.

Call for nominations

The 2014 Jackie Morales Distinguished Awards for Community Service will be presented during the 12th annual Festival las Americas, Sunday, Aug. 24, at Sopris Park in Carbondale. The awards are given to four local individuals who exemplify the spirit and dedication Morales demonstrated toward the well-being and care of the Latino community. Her inspiration and tireless work during the past decade is personified in each recipient of the award. Morales’ motto, which she wanted every Latino to believe, was “Si, se puede!” (“Yes, you can!”). Morales was an inspiring leader of the first organization dedicated to assist Latinos, Asistencia para Latinos, from 1993 until her death in 2000 from a five-year battle with breast cancer. She was a heroine for her work and inspiration for Latina women fighting the disease. Nominations are being sought in the following categories: Student, Teacher, Volunteer and Business Person. Deadline for submission is Aug. 16.

Community Meetings

The Garfield County Libraries are offering community meetings throughout the county to hear what residents want from their library today and in the future. Dinner will be provided. Meetings will be held at the New Castle Branch Library on Wednesday, Aug. 20; the Parachute Branch Library on Thursday, Aug. 21; the Silt Branch Library on Tuesday, Aug. 26; and the Carbondale Branch Library on Wednesday, Aug. 27. Answers to these questions and more from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Glenwood Springs Library. There will be participation from Glenwood Springs EMT and police. Come, share and learn from fellow riders.
