Carbondale Renegade Marching Band

The Carbondale Renegade Marching Band rehearses weekly at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evenings in front of the bandstand in Sopris Park, Carbondale. All instrumentalists are invited to join this zany group, which will play at upcoming community events such as Independence Day, Mountain Fair, Potato Day, etc. For a taste of the fun, complete with costumes, dancers and stilt-walkers, see the Carbondale Renegade Marching Band Facebook page.

Literacy Outreach seeks volunteer Tutors

Literacy Outreach is looking for tutor volunteers to help people who are eager to improve their reading, writing, math or English-speaking skills. Volunteers do not have prior teaching experience or need to speak Spanish, just a desire to help, the ability to read and speak English, and at least two hours of time a week to work one-on-one with an adult.

A volunteer informational session will be held from 6-7 p.m. June 17 at the Literacy Outreach Teo Prinster Learning Center, 1127 School St. in Glenwood Springs. Call 970- 945-5282 for more information.

Senior Matters needs volunteers

Senior Matters of Carbondale is pursuing volunteers to help with events and to join the board of trustees. The Senior Matters board meets the third Wednesday of the month at the Third Street Center, Room 33, in Carbondale.

Again this year Senior matters is serving sno cones at the Carbondale Wild West Rodeo.

Senior Matters has other events during the year for which volunteers are needed. Sign up as a “friend of Senior Matters” and help us fulfill our mission statement “Foster Diverse Education and Social Programs for Seniors of all Ages.” Contact Mildred (970)-945-7094 or Dee (970) 963-2653.

Hunter education and safety class

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will conduct a hunter education and safety class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 20 and 21 at the Community Center in Glenwood Springs. Anyone born after January 1, 1949, must have a hunter education card to buy a hunting license in Colorado. Students will learn game identification, firearm safety, ethics, shot placement, game recovery and much more. Call CPW at 947-2920 to register.

Defiance Community Players fundraiser and silent auction

Defiance Community Players is hosting a fundraiser and silent auction for the fall production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 28, at the Glenwood Vaudeville Revue, Ninth and Colorado. Seating is limited to 150.

Silt Heyday

This year Silt Heyday takes place on Aug. 3-4. On Saturday, Aug. 3, the Heyday Hobble 5K takes place, and Sunday, Aug. 4, is the day for the Heyday Car show. For information, call 970-876-5861.
