Teach an adult basic literacy skills

Help an adult learner in Garfield County learn basic literacy skills. Some struggle to read and write and complete simple math computations. Some struggle to improve their oral English skills. You can make a difference. Attend a volunteer information session at 5:30 p.m. March 30, at Literacy Outreach, Teo Prinster Learning Center, 1127 School St., Glenwood Springs. Impact of Drought on Colorado and the West with Jason Neff



Professor of Environmental Studies Jason Neff will speak on the impact of drought in Colorado and the West. This program will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, March 30, at the Rifle Branch Library. This event is being held in conjunction with the exhibit, “Dust, Drought, and Dreams Gone Dry” that resides at the branch from March 6 until April 17.

Sopris Elementary School kindergarten registration



Sopris Elementary School kindergarten registration will be from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 10. Bring your child’s birth certificate, current immunizations and proof of address. Kindergarten Information Night is at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, in the school cafeteria. School tours take place at 9 a.m. March 31. For more information or questions, call SES at 970-384-5400.

Painting Pages at the library

The Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts and Glenwood Springs Library invite you to participate in their collaborative Art and Literacy project, “Painting Pages,” which will be offered at 4 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. This project will run from now until May. Elementary school-aged children are invited to come enjoy live storytelling and create a work of art that expresses them and the story that they enjoyed. Cornhole Tournament

The second annual Roaring Fork Beer Company Cornhole Tournament will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at the Carbondale Recreation and Community Center. Teams of two will compete for prizes. New Castle craft/trade show

The New Castle Chamber is having its first Annual Craft/Trade Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 11, at New Hope Church in New Castle. There are still vendor spaces available for this event. Mother’s Day Mile

Don’t miss the 16th annual Mother’s Day Mile at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 10. The 1-mile race is a fundraiser for Advocate Safehouse Project. The race is open to women, men and families. Special attraction is Roses for Moms, along with the huge Gift Basket Silent Auction, kids’ activities, a chance to win age group awards and everyone gets a piece of homemade apple pie.
