Happy birthday, Ida!
Ida Toniolli celebrated her 104th birthday on Jan. 2. She was born in Glenwood Springs and at the age of 9 months traveled to Faver, Austria, with her family. Her father came back to the United States after several years; however, the family was unable to join him because of the outbreak of World War I. Ida, along with her mother and brother, returned to the U.S. in 1920 and settled in on a ranch in Main Elk.
She has many stories of riding horseback to the Elk Park School, which educated children in grades one through eight. She later attended New Castle High School and played on the girls’ basketball team.
She married John Toniolli in 1932. They later bought the Western Hotel. They had two children, Johnnie and Roz.
Ida was an active member of the Eagles Club, Catholic Daughters of America, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Jane Jefferson Club and the Legion Auxiliary well into her 90s.
