Kiwanis Terrific Kids at Sopris Elementary School

Eleven Sopris Elementary School students in grades 1-5 were recognized by the Glenwood Springs Kiwanis Club as Terrific Kids.

This Kiwanis program promotes character development, self-esteem, and perseverance by rewarding behavior that is Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable.

Students work with their teachers to establish individual goals that involve behavior, peer relationships, attendance, and schoolwork.

After working with students for a specific time period to reach goals, teachers recognize students who reach those goals. Recognition includes appearing before parents and classmates to receive a certificate and other prizes (the coupon for a free cheeseburger seems to be the most popular).

Research has shown that behavior and discipline problems drop from 50 percent to 70 percent in the first academic year the school implements the program.

Larry Robinson is the Kiwanis coordinator of the Terrific Kids program, and Kent Wilson coordinates it for Sopris Elementary School.
