Kiwanis Terrific Kids at Glenwood Springs Elementary School

Thirty-one Glenwood Springs Elementary School students grades K-5 were recognized as Terrific Kids. This Kiwanis program promotes character development, self-esteem and perseverance by rewarding behavior that is Thougthtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable. Students work with their teachers to establish individual goals that involve behavior, peer relationships, attendance, and schoolwork. After working with students for a specific time period to reach goals, teachers recognize students who reach those goals. Recognition includes appearing before parents and classmates to receive a certificate and other prizes (the coupon for a free cheeseburger seems to be the most popular). Research has shown that behavior and discipline problems drop from 50 percent to 70 percent in the first academic year the school implements the program. Larry Robinson is the Kiwanis coordinator of the Terrific Kids program, and Travis Lowell coordinates it for Glenwood Springs Elementary School.
