The 32nd annual Basalt Half Marathon is slated for Aug. 16. Race-day registration will take place at the Basalt Middle School beginning at 6:15 a.m.

Runners will be bused to the start line at the base of Ruedi Dam at 7 a.m. sharp. The race is set to start at 7:45 a.m. Pre-registration is available through or at Mason and Morse in Basalt.

The annual Glenwood Springs Elks Lodge soccer shoot, which consists of skills contests, is Aug. 16 at Two Rivers Park. The event begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. and is open to boys and girls 7 to 13 years old and is separated into four age divisions. Winners advance to district competition in September.

Glenwood Springs Middle School will begin its fall sports season on Aug. 18.

Eighth-grade girls need to report, ready to practice, at 3 p.m., while seventh-grade girls will report at 3:15 p.m. Eighth-grade football players will receive their gear from 3 to 4 p.m. and seventh-grade players will get their gear from 4 to 5 p.m.

Any student interested in playing middle school volleyball or football must have a current physical, a $30 athletic fee and parents and players need to read and sign the athletic handbook before they’re allowed to practice. These forms can be picked up from the middle school Thursday or Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Players can join teams after Aug. 18; however, late starts can impact how many games you are eligible to play in.

Carbondale Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade football will begin practice at 3 p.m. on Aug. 18. Equipment checkout will be Aug. 13.

The eighth-grade team will practice the remainder of the week starting Aug. 19 from 9 to 10:30 a.m., and the seventh-grade team will practice from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

From Aug. 18 to 22, the Glenwood Springs Community Center is playing host to an all-encompassing sports camp that focuses on fundamentals, eye-hand coordination, sportsmanship, team play and fun. Pre-registration is required.

El Jebowl in El Jebel is taking league sign-ups for the fall.

Spots are open in the following leagues: Monday night women’s, meeting Aug. 25 at 6:30 p.m., league starts Sept. 8 (four-woman teams); Friday night mixed, meeting Aug. 22 at 7 p.m., league starts Sept. 5 (three-person teams).

The Longhorn Stampede 5K is set for Aug. 23 at 8:30 a.m. Race-day registration for the annual Basalt High School cross-country team fundraiser will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Basalt High School.

Age-group award presentations and a prize drawing will take place following the race.

The Glenwood Springs Soccer Club is holding open enrollment for girls and boys 4 to 8 years old. Register online at

Registration for the fifth annual Lead King Loop charity races is open. This year’s events will be held on Sept. 14. In addition to the 25K and 12.5K. New to the schedule is a kids 2.5K. The races are part of the Colorado Runner Racing Series.

These award-winning races take place in and around Marble on one of the prime color weekends of the fall.

Runners and walkers are invited to participate in the Glenwood Canyon Shuffle Race for Literacy on Sept. 27. A half-marathon (13.1-mile) run and relay race, and 5K (3.1-mile) run/walk will take place on the bike path in scenic Glenwood Canyon east of Glenwood Springs.

The half-marathon begins at 9 a.m. and the 5K starts at 10. Buses will take participants from the finish line at the No Name exit of Glenwood Canyon to the race starting points. Relay teams of up to five people are welcome to participate in the half-marathon. Team sponsorships by companies, service clubs or other organizations are encouraged.

The race entry fee includes a long-sleeved T-shirt.
