Army should not oversee civil defense

John Hoffmann

Dear Editor,

It would worry me to integrate the Armed Forces with the Civil Defense by placing a five-star Army General over it.

Governments have legislated against a civil defense and armed forces combination since the Roman Empire, when it was illegal to garrison an army near Rome.

The civil defense is an arm of the legislative branch of the government and gives it a tooth to hold the executive and judicial branches accountable for their actions. The president controls the Army, Navy and Air Force. The judicial branch controls civil police forces.

It is important for the three to remain separated as a check and balance for each other, in spirit, if not in equality of strength. Otherwise, any wealthy group could steal a presidential election and get control of our armed forces and wreak havoc on the world with accountability to no one.

Please! Vote no to placing a five-star Army general over our civil defense. The only reason that would be necessary is if we desired to create a military dictatorship. True security lies with a people who are confident in the justice of their laws.

Please call U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis at 202-225-4761, U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard at 202-224-5941, and U.S. Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell at 202-224-5852.

Sincerely,

John Hoffmann
