Arrests made in West Glenwood fire

Two juveniles were arrested Monday in connection with a structure fire in West Glenwood Sunday.

The boys were arrested on suspicion of having started a fire that burned two unoccupied structures near Mel Ray Road and Highway 6. The fire also damaged Geno’s Liquors and the Shell Westmart convenience store, which remain closed.

One of the boys attends Glenwood Springs Middle School and the other is 15 and reportedly a freshman in high school, Glenwood police Lt. Bill Kimminau said.

Kimminau said the boys may have been playing with a gas can and matches when the fire occurred.

“They were just playing around in the house and it sounds like things kind of got out of hand,” he said.

They have been charged with second-degree arson, criminal mischief and trespass.
