Art guild kicks off Strawberry Days

GLENWOOD SPRINGS- Let the festivities begin!
Strawberry Days’ first official event took place Thursday as the Glenwood Springs Art Guild set up easels, loaded their brushes, and put paint to paper for an afternoon of art in Centennial Park.
“The chamber asked us to come paint today to support the community,” said art guild member Cynthia Thomas of the Strawberry Days kick-off event.
“The chamber wanted to include us for some activity,” said group member Nancy Martin.
The group has participated in the opening of Strawberry Days for the past several years.
It seems most people enjoy the art guild painting in the park.
“The merchants appreciate the presence,” said Martin.
“Tourists and locals seemed to enjoy the fact that there was something going on,” said group member Portia Griefenberg.
Griefenberg met a woman from New York who visits Glenwood every summer and claimed that her husband had been a friend of famed Spanish painter Salvador Dali.
Guild member Chris Erickson was taking a day off work to paint and escape, hoping to, “sell some work, sell some paintings.”
Though Erickson didn’t have any luck, Griefenberg fared better.
“I sold one,” she said, “which was a surprise,” noting that the purpose of the event was not sales. “It’s a bonus,” she said.
Though painting was the official activity for the afternoon, the group met as much for friendship as for art.
“It’s two-fold,” said group member Eve Booth, “support for painting and communing with like-minded people.”
