Aspen group Theater Masters announces Aspiring Playwrights winners
ASPEN, Colorado ” Theater Masters has announced the winners of the annual Aspiring Playwrights Competition, a high school writing contest involving the valley’s high schools. A pair of high school juniors, Nicole Smith of Aspen High School and Brendan Peters of Roaring Fork High School were named as winners and their plays will be performed as part of Theater Masters “TAKE TEN” production.
Smith wrote her play as an assignment in a Theater I class titled “When the Stars Collapse.”
“My biggest problem was tying up the loose ends in my plotline. I had to give my main character … a more personal dilemma and family background that would cause her sacrifice to seem plausible,” she said.
Peters wrote an autobiographical play, “Between Boys and Men,” to the competition. Peters says he enjoys writing, but admits that this was his first experience in theater.
“I never had a problem while writing my piece. It came from the heart, and so I wasn’t really writing, I was merely retelling an event that happened to a friend and me. At the time, I felt it needed to be written, so I wrote it,” he said.
The two plays will be performed at the Aspen High School Black Box Theatre along with winning plays from the Theater Masters National MFA Playwrights Festival in “TAKE TEN” January 25, 26, 27 at 7:30 p.m.
