Aspen picks up Chicago, S.F. flights

A crowd at the Aspen Chamber Resort Association’s annual membership luncheon whooped it up Thursday when they learned United Airlines will offer service from Chicago and San Francisco to Aspen this winter.Two additional nonstop daily flights will come from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and one nonstop will come from San Francisco daily on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, according to Jim Elwood, director of aviation at the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport.Commercial airline service for the ski season is often up in the air at this time of the year. Last year business officials were concerned whether United Airlines would survive bankruptcy, let alone expand service to Aspen. So, the business community was thrilled to learn United’s plans so early this summer. The new flights will be available for sale beginning Saturday, Aug. 26, Elwood said.In addition to the new nonstop service, United is adding service to Denver and to Los Angeles International Airport. There will be 11 daily flights between Aspen and Denver, plus four extra flights per weekend.There will be one daily flight between LAX and Aspen plus three extra flights on weekends during ski season.
