Aspen Rotary Club hands out $38,000 in grants

The Aspen Rotary Club has distributed grants equaling $38,000 to 31 local nonprofit organizations, it was recently announced.

The funds for the annual grants, which range from $500 to $3,000 each, are raised through the Club’s Ducky Derby, held each summer in the Rio Grande Park.

This year’s grant recipients were selected from more than 60 applications. Priority was given to educational programs followed by health and human service programs, according to Don Wrigley, Rotary Club funding chair.

“We focus on local needs and the function of the organizations. Preference is given to start-ups that demonstrate the ability to create their own sources of funding in the future,” he said in a statement. “We like to see the grants used to help the highest number of people possible, and we evaluate how our grant would impact the organization’s overall budget. Finally, we weigh the need for the organization in the valley.”

This year’s Rotary grant recipients are: Alpine Legal Services; Aspen Camp School of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; Aspen Homeless Shelter; Basalt High School Music Department; Basalt Elementary School Star; Blue Lake Preschool; Christmas Wish; Early Learning Center; English in Action; Family Visitor Programs; Feed My Sheep; Hospice of the Valley; LIFT-UP; Literacy Outreach; PathFinders for Cancer; PTO; Red Brick Council for the Arts; Response, Help for Battered Women; Roaring Fork Conservancy; Roaring Fork Early Learning Fund (Raising a Reader); Roaring Fork Kids; Science in Schools; Shining Stars; Spell Binders Roaring Fork Project; Tomorrow’s Voices; Valley Partnership for Drug Prevention; Windwalkers; Yampah Mountain High School; Your Friend for Life; YouthZone; Youth Entity; and the Children’s Health Foundation.
