Aspen Skico investigating platform incident

Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

An Aspen Skiing Co. spokesman said the company “will do an active investigation” after an unloading platform near the top of Aspen Mountain collapsed Sunday night during the Fourth of July fireworks display.

The Skico’s Jeff Hanle said the company wants to determine the cause of the collapse and what it will take to get the platform back in shape.

Six people stood on it to watch the fireworks, but the structure, which sits at the top of Lift 1A, is not meant to hold that many people, Hanle said.

Firefighters responded to a 911 call at 9:30 p.m., toward the end of the fireworks display, from someone saying “a balcony with six people on it [had] collapsed.”

One person was taken to the hospital, according to a sheriff’s office statement, and another injured party was apparently treated at the scene.

A sheriff’s official said no information about the person who went to the hospital for “non-life-threatening injuries” would be released by the sheriff’s office due to federal patient privacy rules.

Hanle said it’s too early to tell how much it will cost to replace or fix the platform, but said he didn’t think it would be expensive.
