Aspen tumbles in 3A title game

FORT COLLINS, Colorado – Joe Hegarty scored 18 points to lead Faith Christian to its third consecutive state boys basketball title with a 57-47 win over Aspen in the Class 3A final Saturday night.

Deron Rindels added 12 points for Faith Christian (26-1), whose lone loss was a 2-0 forfeit to Denver Christian.

The Eagles were the top seed in the 32-team state playoffs.

Second-seeded Aspen (27-1) trailed 39-35 late in the third quarter, but Faith Christian went on a 14-4 run to lead 53-39 with 3:33 left.

Andrew Papenfus, who finished with 13 points, scored the next six points to draw Aspen within 53-45. But Rindels made two free throws with a minute to go to seal the win at Colorado State University’s Moby Arena.

PUEBLO, Colorado – Paonia’s girls made the Western Slope proud, winning the Class 2A girls title with a 43-39 victory over Akron at Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Jordyn Rienks and Johanna Reed combined to score seven points in the game’s final 90 seconds.
