Linda Jenks, pianist and doctor of musical arts, will present the first concert in Rifle’s 2008 St. Mary Performance Series at 7 p.m. tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Seventh and Birch streets in Rifle. This opening concert will showcase Beethoven’s monumental Waldstein Piano Sonata, one of his largest and most complex piano compositions. Jenks will work through the piece with audience members, detailing some of the technical and philosophical quandaries that confront any performer of this important work. She will then perform the work for the audience.
Refreshments will be served after the concert.

Glenwood Spring Center for the Arts classes began Jan. 14. Classes are available for all ages for all classes.
Dance classes will be showcased in the Glenwood Springs Center for the Arts annual Dancers Dancing May 2-3.

The 10th annual Rifle Gap Ice Fishing Tournament will be held Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19-20.
The grand prize winner has a chance to win $20,000 in cash. Categories include adult and youth rainbow trout, brown trout and yellow perch.

Thunder River Theatre Company is now registering students for its Winter After-School Drama Classes. Classes are offered for elementary and middle school students, plus an “ESL Through Theatre” class. The elementary and ESL classes are eight weeks long and the special middle school class is 12 weeks long. All classes begin the week of Jan. 28.

The classical trio, Opus 40, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in the auditorium of the EnCana Academic Center at Colorado Mountain College’s new West Garfield Campus, 3695 Airport Road in Rifle. The event is part of the Jim Calaway Honor Series, presented by Colorado Mountain College’s Center for Excellence in the Arts and CMC’s West Garfield Campus.
The classical ensemble’s repertoire features music written for violin, horn and piano, including Johannes Brahms’ lively horn trio.
