CARBONDALE, Colorado ” Police closed down Main Street for about five hours and around 70 people lost electricity after a backhoe driver accidentally hit an above-ground cable television line.

Carbondale Police Chief Gene Schilling said the backhoe driver, Garret Armsby, 31, of Grand Junction, will be cited with careless driving. The accident happened around 10 a.m. Monday on the 1000 block of Main Street.

Armsby was working for Par Construction, a subcontractor of Xcel Energy, on some underground distribution work when the accident occurred, Schilling said.

“He hooked a line on a pole that went across the street and pulled it,” Schilling said. “The pole broke, but not completely.”

It was left standing at an angle. Police decided it could fall and closed down the street. Main Street was reopened around 3 p.m.

Schilling said Armsby was not hurt or shocked with electricity, although people did see sparks when the line was snagged. Nothing other than the pole and lines was damaged, Schilling said.

Mark Stutz, a spokesman for Xcel Energy, said the accident caused an outage to about 70 customers in Carbondale. Some experienced the outage until about 4 p.m.
