Bacteria show up in Rifle city water

While there is no emergency, the water in the city of Rifle has been recently identified as being contaminated with Coliform bacteria.Letters to city residents were received on Thursday from the city of Rifle.”Usually, coliforms are a sign that there could be a problem with the treatment or distribution system (pipes),” the letter reads. “Whenever we detect coliform bacteria in any sample, we do follow-up testing to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E. coli, are present.”The letter says none of those bacteria were found in subsequent tests.”Total coliform bacteria are generally not harmful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially harmful, bacteria may be present,” according to the letter. “Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems.”The city says it is not necessary for residents to boil their water or take other corrective action, although those with specific health concerns, including severely compromised immune systems, infants and the elderly, may want to contact their health care providers. For more information, please call Bob Jones, chief plant operator at 625-2841.For more information, please call Bob Jones, chief plant operator at 625-2841.
