Balloon Fest takes off next weekend

Hot air balloons will take to the skies at the Garfield County Airport in Balloon Fest 2002 Saturday, Sept. 7, and Sunday, Sept. 8.

New this year will be a balloon glow from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at the Glenwood Springs Community Center. The tethered balloons fill with gas and “glow” in the sunset.

Saturday and Sunday will feature a mass ascension of hot air balloons at dawn, followed by a pancake breakfast from 6:30 to 10 a.m. hosted by the New Castle Lions Club. Cost for breakfast is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and children. Admission to Balloon Fest 2002 is free.

The festival is sponsored by the Glenwood Springs Association of Realtors (GSAR), area businesses and the hot air ballooning community.

Additional activities will include a silent auction, an airport open house with static aircraft displays, the Aerospace Adventures Education program and tethered balloon rides.

The purpose of the festival is to raise awareness for the GSAR Affordable Housing Fund. Established in 1993, the fund assists first time home buyers with moderate incomes to secure home loans.

On average, 17 households per year have been approved to receive grants of $1,400. Because of funds raised at last year’s Balloon Fest, 13 home buyers have been helped so far this year. Of those 13, two have purchased homes in Glenwood Springs, one in Parachute, three in Silt and seven in Rifle.
