Barbecue benefits area family

PARACHUTE ” The Hideout will hold a benefit at 5 p.m. today to defray costs Taylor DeMarco’s family incurred as a result of the boy’s death.
Taylor, who was 9 years old, was shot and killed on July 20 in Battlement Mesa.
Barbecue sandwiches, pickles and potato salad will be available for $5. The Hideout is donating the food, and proceeds from the event benefit the family, Hideout owner Vee Daugherty said. Daugherty said she knows the DeMarco family and wanted to do something for them.
“It’s a very, very bad time in their lives, and if there’s anything we can do …” Daugherty said. “There’s nothing we can do, really, except maybe alleviate some of their financial burdens.”
Volunteers have collected goods and gift certificates from businesses throughout the Colorado River Valley for a silent auction.
“Oh my goodness,” Daugherty said. “It’s just endless what people have given us.”
A gas station donated $100 worth of gas, the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool provided guest packages, and the Hotel Colorado and the Glenwood Caverns also gave to the cause.
The Swingin’ Mood Cats will perform at 7 p.m. For a $10 entry fee, participants can sign up for pool and darts competitions for prizes.
“I don’t want to make a goal, because the more money we can raise, the better. We’re hoping a lot of people come out,” Daugherty said.
