Basalt River Days

Glenwood remembers the Strawberry; New Castle honors their Burning Mountains, Carbondale admires the potato, and Basalt pays tribute to the Trout.

The Basalt Chamber of Commerce hosted “Basalt River Days,” its annual community celebration Friday and Saturday last weekend.

The event, which is in its ninth year, drew hundreds of people to the festivities in downtown Basalt.

In 1887, the year the town was founded, it was called Frying Pan Junction.

Locals gave it its current name in 1901 when Swiss immigrants from Italy moved to the area to work in the mines and on the railroad. When the mines closed, people started ranches.

Today, because of its gold-medal rivers, Basalt is known as the “Fishing Capital” of the Western Slope.

And to keep it that way, the Roaring Fork Conservancy, whose mission it is to protect the rivers and streams of the Roaring Fork Valley, was there to inspire others to do the same.

More than a dozen others showed their environmental support by driving Prius cars in the parade.

Prius is the Hybrid car that joins a gas engine with an emissions-free electric motor for maximum fuel economy of about 650 miles between tank fill-ups.

“We’re interested in preserving the environment in this beautiful area,” said Susan Linden.

For some that shows where passions lay for Basaltines.
