Bear siting forces special order at Ruedi Reservoir

Special to the Post Independent

The recent July 4th holiday attracted a hungry bear as well as human visitors to the Ruedi Reservoir campgrounds. The single bear rummaged through stored boats, tents and an unattended camp trailer in search of food.

There were no injuries and no aggressive behavior toward people reported, but due to safety concerns Forest Supervisor Martha Ketelle signed a “Special Order” that prohibits use of tents and soft-sided campers with soft materials extending to within 5 feet of the ground. The order also prohibits visitors from having any food, cooking equipment and utensils unless it is stored in a bear-proof container or in a closed vehicle, when not in use by visitors. The intent of the prohibition is to protect people and bears.

These prohibitions will remain in effect until rescinded at Little Maud, Mollie B, and Little Mattie campgrounds and at the Ruedi Marina campground and day use area. “The berry and nut crop at the reservoir seems to be lacking again this year, and there is the potential to see more bears in campgrounds as they try to fatten up for winter. Visitors need to realize that their actions are a significant contributing factor in attracting bears to campgrounds,” according to Forest Service spokesperson Mike Kenealy.
