Bearcat called to handle threat Sunday night

NEW CASTLE, Colorado – A man authorities believed to be armed with a hunting rifle barricaded himself into a bedroom in the Apple Tree Mobile Home Park near New Castle on Sunday night, prompting Garfield County sheriff’s deputies to call out the Bearcat armored vehicle.

According to Undersheriff Colt Cornelius, deputies were called to the home on the night of Dec. 12 to deal with a “barricaded male” who was said to be “extremely uncooperative” and had been accused of threatening a neighbor.

Unable to talk the man out of the bedroom, deputies called in the county’s All Hazards Response Team (AHRT) and the Bearcat, an armored sport utility vehicle with a rotating turret on top and bullet proof sides and glass.

Cornelius wrote in an e-mail that about 18 members of the AHRT were involved in the incident. Cornelius reported that the Bearcat fired “chemical munitions” into the bedroom, forcing the man outside.

He was grabbed by deputies, arrested and taken to the Garfield County Jail.

Aside from the effects of the chemicals, no one was injured in the incident, and no weapons were fired, Cornelius reported.

Because all the reports on the incident had not been filed as of Monday’s press deadline, Cornelius was unable to say if there were weapons or drugs seized as part of the operation.

The identify of the man arrested, and the charges against him, were not available at press time.
