Bears beaten by Sun Devils in soccer playoffs

Surrendering three goals apiece in the first and second halves, Rifle’s boys soccer team bowed out of the 3A state playoffs with a 6-2 loss at Kent Denver in the first round on Thursday.

The Bears, seeded 30th in the 32-team bracket, were underdogs against third-seeded Kent Denver.

Austin Hughes had a hat trick to pace the Sun Devils, who improved to 12-2-1 and will face No. 14 Jefferson in the second round on Saturday.

Sam Buck, Sam Wittmer and Matt Olson also scored goals for Kent Denver.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first half, Ivan Moreno put Rifle on the board with a goal. Julio Aguirre assisted.

Geo Munoz closed the gap to 3-2 later in the half, bending a shot into the upper corner from roughly 25 yards out.

“It was a rocket,” Bears coach Rich Carter said. “It was a nice goal.”

The Sun Devils came alive in the second half, scoring three goals to put the game out of reach.

The Bears finished their season with a 5-10-1 overall record.

“It’s been eight years since we’ve been to the playoffs,” Carter said. “We consider this a building year. Hopefully, we can keep building off of this year.”
