RIFLE – Last season was one to remember for Rifle’s wrestling program.

The Bears were mighty active at February’s state championships in Denver, taking home a gold, a silver, two bronzes and a fourth-place team finish.

With the 2009-10 season set to begin, they hope to sustain the immense success the program’s enjoyed in recent years.

Rifle, which returns senior James Martinez, last year’s third-place finisher in Class 4A at 135 pounds, opens with Saturday’s Wildcat Invitational at Fruita Monument High School.

Martinez, rated No. 2 at 140 pounds in On the Mat’s preseason rankings, is one of four ranked Bears set to take the mat. Larry Schmueser owns 4A’s No. 6 ranking at 130 pounds. Marcus Arroyo is ninth at 135 and Tyler Davis is 16th at 189.

Martinez had the best record of the bunch last season, going 36-10 overall.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS – Vincent Tsosie, ranked 12th in Class 4A at 130 pounds, leads Glenwood Springs into the wrestling season. The Demons begin their campaign tonight at home against Battle Mountain and Eagle Valley.

Last season, Glenwood saw then-senior Greg Orosz take fifth place in the 4A heavyweight division at the state tournament.
