Bears hoops teams sweep Basalt

Despite trailing late, Rifle pulled out a 49-44 win over visiting Basalt on Saturday.

“They finished strong,” Longhorns coach Jon Pettit said. “They’re a handful.”

Blake Scherer scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace Basalt, which dropped to 6-10 overall and to 3-7 in the 3A Western Slope League.

Rifle improved to 9-6 overall and to 8-2 in league. The Bears lead the 3A WSL North.

Rifle’s girls also won on Saturday, improving to 15-0 overall with a 58-25 rout of Basalt.

The Bears, ranked fourth by The Denver Post in its latest 3A poll, improved to 10-0 in the 3A WSL.

Basalt fell to 5-10 overall and to 3-7 in league play.

Shawnee Young scored 12 points and Haley Johnson and Amelia Sudick added nine apiece as Grand Valley’s girls topped visiting Hotchkiss on Saturday, 45-33.

Brandi Krieg finished with seven points for the host Cardinals, who improved to 7-9 overall and to 7-3 in the 3A WSL.

Also in Parachute, Matt Donello led a balanced Grand Valley offense with 14 points as the Cardinals scored a 55-46 boys basketball win over Hotchkiss.

Bubby Beecraft added 11 points and Trevor Smith had nine for Grand Valley, which sits atop the 3A WSL South with a 13-3 overall record and 8-2 league mark.
