Big Fish smoke plume was spectacular

Dear Editor,

Hi from Steamboat Springs.

I am retired from the U.S. Forest Service. Last Thursday I was coming back to Steamboat from Estes Park. From the top of Trail Ridge Road, the pyrocumulus cloud and smoke plume from the Big Fish fire in the Flat Tops was clearly visible. It was absolutely spectacular.

In the Kremmling area, the smoke blotted out the sun completely and cast a giant shadow 20 miles in length. In this darkened area, the temperature was at least 10 degrees cooler than in the surrounding environment not affected by the plume. South of Kremmling the shadow must have been considerably larger because the sun was near the northern edge of the plume at Kremmling.
