RIFLE – Clubbing 20 hits and plating 22 runs, Rifle’s softball team stormed to a sweep of visiting Montrose and Montezuma-Cortez in a Friday twin bill at Deerfield Park.

Behind two-hit performances from Alisha Rodebaugh and Vanessa Herrera, the Bears bested Montrose 11-5 in the opener.

Both Rodebaugh and Herrera had doubles. Dannan Dueitt belted a triple.

Rodebaugh picked up the pitching win, giving up no earned runs on seven hits in a complete-game effort.

Rifle improved to 2-1 on the young season with an 11-1 drubbing of Cortez in the second game of the day.

Dueitt finished 4-for-4 at the plate. She tripled and doubled in falling a home run shy of a cycle.

Ciara Euler had a hit and two RBIs and Natasha Ehlers had a hit and scored twice.

Rodebaugh again picked up the win in the pitching circle, surrendering an earned run on just two hits. She struck out eight.

Next up for Rifle is a Sept. 5 trip to Grand Junction.

Rifle’s Klayton Costanzo carded a 79 to win Friday’s Cedaredge Bruin Invitational boys golf tournament.

The senior helped Rifle to a third-place overall finish at Deer Creek Village Golf Club.

The Bears, who posted a team score of 267, tailed only first-place Montrose (254) and Palisade (267).

Roaring Fork’s Arick Zeigel shot a 91 to finish in a tie for 11th place.
