BLM seeks public comment on weed management plan

Staff Report
Glenwood Springs, CO Colorado

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado ” The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment regarding an Environmental Assessment and Weed Management Plan within the 568,000 acres managed through the Glenwood Springs Field Office.

The Integrated Weed Management Plan outlines a broad framework that allows resource managers to select appropriate actions to eradicate, significantly reduce, contain, or prevent new infestation of noxious and invasive weeds. The plan will provide a way to use and evaluate a range of possible actions including, prevention, education, coordination, inventory, re-vegetation, and monitoring, as well as manual, chemical, and biological treatments.

The preliminary Environmental Assessment analyzing the Integrated Weed Management Plan is available at the BLM Glenwood Springs Field Office at 50629 Highway 6 and 24, or online at http://www.blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/gsfo.html.

According to the BLM, the Glenwood Field Office has had an increase in noxious and invasive weed infestations during the past several years, with more than 30 state-listed noxious weeds found within the Field Office boundaries. Infestations like these reduce the quality and quantity of wildlife habitat and livestock forage, as well as increase the potential for soil erosion and adverse impacts on water quality.

A variety of techniques including, manual, chemical and biological controls, to control these types of infestations are currently used. The integrated plan is expected to allow for early detection and rapid response to new weed infestation as well as a more proactive, coordinated weed management program for the field office.

Acting BLM Glenwood Springs Field Manager Steve Bennett said that quick action is often the key to eradicating or containing weed infestations.

“Competing this plan and environmental assessment will allow us to respond more quickly with the most appropriate approach to dealing with these infestations,” Bennett said.

Comments will be most useful if received by March 25. Written comments and questions should be directed to the Glenwood Springs Field Office. Electronic comments can be submitted to gsfomail@co.blm.gov.
