Board to consider Sirko and Stein contracts Wednesday

Diana Sirko will get a raise from $165,000 to $170,000 a year under her new contract as Roaring Fork School District superintendent, and Assistant Superintendent Rob Stein will be paid a base of $130,000 a year until he becomes superintendent in 2017, when his compensation will be renegotiated.

The RFSD board of education is expected to take action on contracts for Sirko and Stein at its board meeting Wednesday at the district office in Glenwood Springs.

Open forum public comment is on the agenda for 6:45 p.m. with discussion on the contracts at 8 p.m.

The contracts are the product of weeks of discussion with the assistance of Pam Britton, principal at The Knowledge Environment. The district paid $2,500 for her assistance.

When Sirko sought a contract extension late last year, many parents in the district expressed worry that Stein would leave. They believed he had been designated as the next superintendent. Sirko initially took the role after Stein stepped aside shortly after being hired in 2012 because his wife had a serious bicycle accident.

At a well-attended meeting in December, the board proposed a solution calling for Sirko to remain in her current position for two more years before handing the reigns to Stein.

Besides the 3 percent raise Sirko is slated to receive, she is to get $300 per month for in-district mileage, $100 per month for cell phone usage, 20 vacation days, nine sick days, and three personal leave days. The contract would run from July 1, 2015, until June 30, 2017, when Stein would take over.

Stein’s contract as chief academic officer includes a $130,000 salary, with a $2,200 monthly allowance for mileage, cell phone expenses, and insurance. His contract as superintendent, which will run July 1, 2017, through June 30, 2020, calls for his salary to be set in early 2017 “based on market comparisons and experience,” with similar benefits to Sirko’s.

Shannon Pelland’s contract as chief financial officer and assistant superintendent will be reviewed at a later time.

“The board felt it was better to finish up with Dr. Sirko and Dr. Stein’s contracts and then address the rest of the executive team as we work through the budget over the coming months,” board President Daniel Biggs said earlier.

Also on this week’s agenda is an executive session is to discuss positions related to purchase of land for purposes of improving and relocating RFSD bus facilities for Carbondale and Basalt.
