Bomb scare just that scare

All clear. Businesses were evacuated at Burning Mountain Plaza Friday morning due to a bomb scare. The evacuation order was given at 12:30 p.m. and lifted at 3:30 p.m. when the Grand Junction Police Bomb Squad contained a 3x4x6-inch package, X-rayed it and found it was not a bomb.New Castle police responded about 11:45 a.m. to a call from a postal carrier who discovered an unmarked plastic box in a mailbox outside City Market. It just looked suspicious, said New Castle Police Captain Dennis Mahan. I think it did not have a forwarding or return address. The police also called in the Burning Mountains Fire Protection District, and was assisted by Silt police, the Garfield County Sheriffs Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Among the larger businesses evacuated during the bomb scare were City Market, New Castle SuperBowl and Alpine Bank. The squad to arrived around 2:45 p.m. and determined the package was not a bomb at 3:30 p.m. They did not identify the contents of the package.Mahan said the police department received a number of phone calls about the bomb scare and evacuation.People are asking if its safe to have their kids come home on the bus and it is safe. Everywhere else in town is safe, Mahan said.Contact Donna Gray: 945-8515, ext. 510dgray@postindependent.com
