Bond would improve schools

The $82.3 million bond issue proposed for the November ballot would include the following structural changes in Carbondale schools.Crystal River ElementaryThis school is currently one-fourth the size of Basalt Elementary and caters to pre-kindergarten through first-grade students. If passed, the bond would pay for an addition to Crystal Elementary. The building would be 67,860 square feet, increased from 19,600 square feet. Second- through fourth-grade students at Carbondale Elementary would transfer to this school. This project is expected to cost $8.5 million.Carbondale ElementaryThe district would remove this school from service. The district is still discussing what it would do with the land and building. The district suggested joint use with the town of Carbondale and affordable housing for teachers.Carbondale Middle SchoolThe current middle school would move to what is now Roaring Fork High School. Fifth-grade students from Carbondale Elementary will attend the new middle school. The old middle school may serve Bridges High School, district technical support and joint use of the gym and cafeteria with the community.Roaring Fork High SchoolWill become the new Carbondale Middle School. An auxiliary gym will be added and safety upgrade changes made. Construction for this building will cost about $2 million.New high schoolModeled off Basalt High School, which is 79,000 square feet. This building will be $84,000 square feet and cost roughly $17 million.- Ivy Vogel
