BooCoo opens Carbondale summer music series
CARBONDALE, Colorado – The 2009 Carbondale Summer of Music Concert Series opens Sunday, June 28, in Sopris Park, with local favorites BooCoo and Friends, featuring Chris Bank, Joe Kelly and Chris Goplerud, kicking things off.Members of the Jazz Aspen Summer Class will give a recital to begin the evening’s musical entertainment at 6 p.m.The concert is also preceded at 5:30 p.m. by the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities annual membership picnic meeting and board of directors election at the park shelter. Burgers (veggie included), wine and beer will be served for all active CCAH members.CCAH sponsors the Summer of Music series in collaboration with the town of Carbondale.”This series attracts many to the valley to enjoy free music and experience our lovely town,” said Amy Kimberly of CCAH. “Summer of Music started as an economic stimulus for downtown businesses and has grown to be a deﬁning event for the community of Carbondale.”The concerts are broadcast live on KDNK Community Radio and streamed at http://www.kdnk.com for those who can’t be there. But the real fun is in the park.”This collaboration between Jazz Aspen and CCAH is a great way to begin the summer,” Kimberly said of this Sunday’s concert.The series continues with the special July 4th Boogie in Bonedale celebration, beginning at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, July 4, with Carbondale’s traditional kids parade on Main Street and a group reading of the Declaration of Independence in Sopris Park.Music will be provided by San Francisco-based Aphrodesia, an eight-piece world music ensemble that has made a couple of appearances in Carbondale in recent years.Coming July 12 will be The Infamous String Dusters, which has appeared at numerous bluegrass festivals around the country, followed by Bill Powers (of Sweet Sunny South fame) and the Silvertone Devils on July 19. Both concerts will be at 6 p.m. in Sopris Park.Carbondale’s marquee summer festival, Mountain Fair, is also considered part of the Summer of Music Series. Held July 24-26 in Sopris Park, the weekend will include: The Tony Furtado Band and Vince Herman & Great American Taxi on Friday; Round Mountain, Brave Combo and The Hillbilly Hellcats on Saturday; and Spring Creek, Boulder Acoustic Society, Spiritual Rez and Juno What! on Sunday. The summer series concludes Aug. 8 with a 5 p.m. concert on the 4th Street plaza downtown by the Moonlight Cruisers.
