Boyd named new 9th District judge, Metzger new Garfield County judge

Colorado Gov. Bill Owens announced his appointments for 9th District judge and Garfield County judge.

Aspen’s James Boyd will take over the bench for 9th District Judge J.E.. DeVilbiss, while Glenwood Springs resident Paul Metzger won the county judgeship. He will take over for longtime Garfield County Judge Vic Zerbi.

Boyd, a Snowmass Village resident and partner in the Aspen law firm Boyd and Bazil, has been a civil litigator in the Roaring Fork Valley for 20 years. He is a graduate of Stanford University law school.

Metzger, a part-time municipal judge in New Castle, will now get to use his judging experience at the county level. He’s a Colorado native who moved from Littleton to Glenwood Springs in 1990. In addition to his judging duties, Metzger has his own private practice.

Six finalists for the two judge positions were announced Aug. 7 by the Colorado State Judicial Branch. Owens made the local appointments two days before the Aug. 22 deadline.

Both Boyd and Metzger will start presiding on their respective benches on Jan. 15, the day after DeVilbiss and Zerbi step down.
