Bridge project progress, May traffic impacts
We are just over three months away from the Grand Avenue bridge detour, and our crews are in the final push to complete as much as possible before the shutdown.
To date, crews have set more than 1,000 tons of steel and excavated 14,000 cubic yards of roadway. In the coming weeks, crews will begin pouring the deck on the new traffic bridge and completing as much of the downtown wall construction as possible before the detour. Improvements are being made to the Interstate 70 Exit 114 south roundabout to improve capacity and add a second lane. At the I-70 Exit 116 interchange, crews are replacing concrete and beginning construction of the new Sixth and Laurel roundabout.
With all these activities come many traffic impacts around Glenwood Springs. Now is the time to start voluntarily changing your habits and working together to minimize travel delay times.
U.S. Highway 6
Beginning the week of May 8 through approximately May 19, some areas of U.S. 6 will be in an alternating one-lane configuration while crews pave the highway. Traffic control will maintain two lanes when possible. Fifteen-minute delays are anticipated from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Temporary traffic holds are anticipated on side streets as crews complete mill and fill operations.
Business access will be maintained during this time, with a brief hold in front of each business as crews lay new asphalt. Pedestrian access is maintained on sidewalks along the road.
I-70 Detour, BRIDGE CLOSURE
Interstate 70 night detours are scheduled for Tuesday, May 2; Wednesday, May 3; and Thursday, May 4, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. I-70 traffic eastbound and westbound will be detoured onto east Sixth Street. Both eastbound and westbound traffic will merge into a one-lane configuration and will be detoured through Sixth Street in Glenwood Springs via a break-in-barrier on I-70 near Yampah Vapor Caves. The Grand Avenue bridge will be closed during this time.
Exit 116 Eastbound On-ramp
• The I-70 Exit 116 eastbound on-ramp merge point is reduced to one lane. This lane closure will be in place for several months, as crews access pedestrian bridge piers from the wire wall for masonry work.
• The Exit 116 eastbound ramp is closed from 5:30-9:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Motorists are advised to use westbound I-70 to Exit 114 and turn around at the interchange.
Exit 114 Interchange Work
Work in the I-70 Exit 114 interchange continues. Morning delays are anticipated in the interchange, and metering will take place during peak hours.
Traffic impacts span from the Exit 114 interchange to the Grand Avenue bridge. Please go slow for the cone zone, shift your schedule when possible, and allow extra time in the morning peak hours (7:30-8:30 a.m.). Thank you for your patience as we complete critical path work for the Aug. 14 detour.
We’ve heard from a lot of people who are planning for the detour. Email us what you are planning at email@example.com, and we will feature you in our weekly Answer Man.
