Burglars hit two stores in mall

Skiers and snowboarders: Be on the lookout for well-dressed thieves sporting new leather jackets, snowpants, snowboards and snowskates.

Heath Dennis, store manager of Zumiez snowboard shop in the Glenwood Springs Mall, called police at 7:40 a.m. on Nov. 15 to report a break-in.

“I came in early that day to set up the store for a sale,” said Dennis. “When I got to the shop, our front display window was in shards.”

Glenwood Springs police chief Terry Wilson said investigators found broken glass at the northeast entrance to the mall where a burglar – or burglars – accessed the mall.

Once inside, the thieves cut through security bars at the entrance to Wilsons Leather store and swiped two leather jackets.

Wilsons Leather is a specialty retailer of leather apparel and accessories. The Glenwood shop opened Oct. 10.

After breaking the front window at Zumiez, the culprits stole two hooded sweatshirts, two jackets, three pairs of snowpants, three snowboards and four snowskates.

“Judging from what was taken, we’re thinking this was done by a couple of people,” said Wilson.

Zumiez is part of a nationwide chain of snowboard shops.

“Wherever there’s snow and mountains, there’s a Zumiez,” said Dennis, who’s been with the Washington-based company for three years.

Dennis said burglaries “don’t happen that often” at Zumiez stores, but when they do, “We prosecute within the fullest extent of the law.”

Glenwood’s Zumiez opened on June 6, 2002. This is the first major burglary that’s occurred at the shop.

The case is still under investigation.
