Bus drivers pick up school supplies for kids in need

Bus drivers and transportation personnel in the Garfield County School District Re-2 want to do more for students then dropping students off and picking them up.Since July, the transportation department at Re-2 has collected school supplies for students.Until Sept. 6, boxes will remain outside of Wal-Mart and City Market in Rifle and the City Market in New Castle. The idea is that families shopping for supplies will drop extra supplies in the boxes. The department also welcomes used supplies in good condition. This is the first year the department has done a school supplies drive, but it has already exceeded expectations, said Karen Faber, driver and trainer for the Re-2 transportation department.”We have kids in our district that need assistance and no one to really help,” said Faber.Students in need of supplies can fill out an application and give it to their teacher.Application orders are filled by the transportation department.”This just exemplifies all of the great stuff we’re doing here,” said Theresa Hamilton, director of districtwide services at Re-2.Contact Ivy Vogel: 945-8515, ext. 534ivogel@postindependent.com
