Buses lined up for Bells foliage viewing

RFTA will offer bus service to the Maroon Bells Scenic Area seven days a week through September as leaves take on fall colors. The last day of Bells bus service this year will be Sunday, Oct. 4.

From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Maroon Bells road is limited to buses. Exceptions will be made for vehicles carrying 11 or more occupants and vehicles displaying disability placards, along with vehicles carrying infants in cars seats on a space available basis.

Bus tickets to the Bells cost $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 6-16 and $4 for seniors. Children under 6 ride free. Tickets can be purchased at Aspen Highlands Four Mountain Sports. RFTA buses depart Aspen Highlands Village every 20 minutes, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., then on the half-hour and on the hour from 2:30-4:30 p.m. The last bus departs Maroon Bells Day Use Area at 5 p.m.

After Oct. 4, Maroon Creek Road is open to vehicles 24 hours a day with a $10 use fee or a national pass.

Parking at the Aspen Highlands bus plaza is very limited due to planned parking lot reconstruction that began this week. Use of the free Castle-Maroon bus (Route #3) from Rubey Park to Highlands is strongly encouraged as a connection to the Maroon Bells bus. There will be increased parking enforcement, and vehicles exceeding the 24-hour limit will be towed.

America the Beautiful Interagency Passes, which are good for all federal fee areas, including national parks, and Maroon Bells Passes are available for purchase at the welcome station.

The Every Kid in a Park Pass gives free access to Maroon Bells Scenic Area by individual vehicles before 8 a.m. and after 5 p.m., before Oct. 4 to U.S. fourth-graders (including home-schooled and free-choice learners 10 years of age). Visit https://everykidinapark.gov/ for information on how to obtain a pass.

Passes are not valid while the shuttle bus is running.
