With the closing of the Summit Preschool and Child Care Center in Rifle last December, some 80 families were left with few options. As a result, according to the Early Childhood Network, family child care providers were left to fill in the gap.Luckily for Garfield County, with support from Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc., many of these small family providers were given the resources to improve the quality of their programs. A generous grant to Qualistar Colorado from Encana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc. subsidized the Qualistar RatingTM for 11 providers serving nearly 150 children in Garfield and Mesa counties. The rating is an assessment that measures the overall quality of child care centers, preschool programs and family child care homes.Previous to these assessments, Garfield County has not had any family child care programs participate in a Qualistar RatingTM. This project puts these 11 child care programs in a better position to be prepared for the more stringent licensing requirements that are expected to be rolled out within the next year. Going forward, Qualistar Colorado plans to partner with the Colorado Association of Family Child Care to develop an assessment tool that is tailored to family child care providers.
