KDNK hires new news director

Staff Report

KDNK community access radio has hired Gavin Dahl as news director after a national candidate search, the Carbondale station announced Wednesday.

“I really believe news reporting is a ‘do-ocracy’ these days,” said Dahl, who has been working for the nonprofit Open Media Foundation in Denver and has worked for stations in Colorado, Washington state and Idaho. “Don’t like the media? Make your own.”

Gavin is taking over for January Jones, who joined KDNK in 2014. Jones said she is shifting to freelancing, but will keep working with the KDNK news team on special projects and developing new content.

KDNK General Manager Steve Skinner started the news program in 2006. Skinner said he’s “excited to bring Gavin on. His skills with new media and passion for broadcasting will help us move forward with excellence.”

This year, KDNK’s news team won awards for best newscast from the The Radio Television Digital News Association and from the Colorado Broadcasters Association for a 2015 broadcast. Gavin joins reporter Amy Hadden Marsh and news anchor Steve Cole to make up the primary broadcast team. KDNK local news airs .weekdays between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. and from 5-6 p.m. Archived daily newscasts and stories are available at kdnk.org.
