With three players turning in scorecards under 100, Rifle’s girls swung to a third-place finish at Tuesday’s Montrose Invitational girls golf tournament.

Taylor Walters’ 91 at Cobble Creek led the way for the Bears, who posted a team score of 282. Right behind Walters, who finished sixth in the individual standings, were teammates Kieryn Hammond (95) and Alyx Carter (96).

Allison Powell (113), Courtney Burkett (118), Kylie Fleming (130) and Caitlynn Patton (143) also competed for Rifle.

On Wednesday, the Bears tackled the course at Dos Rios Country Club Gunnison for the first time.

“It was a rough day for the Rifle girls,” coach Britt Choate said. “Dos Rios was new for the girls and the weather was pretty rough. But they all kept their heads held high and tried to do their best.

“As we know, golf is a very difficult game, but a true competitor is one that conducts themselves in a dignified manner, evaluates the day and knows that tomorrow will be better. The girls did just that.”

Carter paced the Bears with a 100. Walters shot a 104, Hammond a 109 and Powell a 127.
