Cafeteria tops list of RMS additions

For the first time since its original construction in 1946, Rifle Middle School will have a cafeteria.Part of a $10.6 million construction project, the cafeteria will hold up to 600 people-a benefit to both the school and community, said Theresa Hamilton, director of district services for Garfield School District No. Re-2.”If the school district can help the community while meeting its own needs, well, why not?” said Hamilton. The size of the cafeteria will allow for large groups in the community to meet in an area where buildings that can hold big crowds are few and far between. The cafeteria is just one component of the 40,000-square-foot addition. New administrative offices, an art room, a vocal music room, seven classrooms, a media center and teacher work rooms are part of the addition, Hamilton said.Construction for the addition started in May. On August 13, the school will be open to the public and ready for use, Hamilton said. The majority of funding for the addition came from a bond issue passed in 2001.The bond funded $8.3 million of the $10.6 million with the rest coming from capitol reserves. Rifle Middle School will also have a new gym floor and several new windows, which will save energy, Hamilton said.”Rifle Middle School is growing very rapidly and the addition of classroom space is very much needed for the kids and staff,” Hamilton said.Contact Ivy Vogel: 945-8515, ext. 534ivogel@postindependent.com
