Calaway Scholars Program pioneers, mentors meet

Student recipients of the scholarship “Calaway Scholars” met with scholarship benefactor and CMC supporter Jim Calaway and a team of mentors at a semester welcome luncheon at CMC-Spring Valley recently.

Calaway and CMC’s Foundation designed the new scholarship for deserving students, adding a mentor component as well as a work study requirement to the scholarship criteria.

The mentors for the Calaway Scholars program consist of local businesspeople, CMC faculty, staff and CMC Foundation staff and board members who will be “on-call” to student recipients Heather Bentson, Cassandra Ricotta, and Jennifer Stroder throughout their education at CMC and beyond.

According to CMC Foundation Board Chair Bob Young, this first group of Calaway Scholars is impressive. In describing the students, CMC Foundation specialist Carol Brown comments, “They all have aspirations for their futures and are overcoming great challenges to achieve their goals. In addition, they’ve got a great group of mentors who were specifically assembled to support them every step of the way.”

Calaway and the CMC Foundation designed the Calaway Scholars scholarship to continue in perpetuity for Spring Valley residential students. For more information on this scholarship, contact Carol Brown at 947-8355.
