Calling on women to stop the war

Dear Editor,

“Last night I had the strangest dream I ever had before. I dreamed the world had all agreed to put an end to war.” – Peter, Paul and Mary

Actually I did have a dream about war last night. Bombs exploding, gunfire, smoke. People running and screaming.

There were bodies laying silently still, terrified children looking for their parents. The sights, the sounds, the smells were overwhelming.

We are not at war yet (if we don’t count Afghanistan and any number of other military skirmishes where Americans are asked to risk their lives).

We are in the process of justifying this war: “Jus ad belleum,” or justice on the way to war.

It is time in this world that we as a people decide how we will be governed. The use of force or the rule of law. What next?

Perhaps a movement of women: mothers, wives, daughters and grandmothers join together and say enough. Enough bloodshed, enough of our babies, our men, our brother and husbands dying. No more!

Perhaps if women would unite we could end this foolish practice. Perhaps someday the world would all agree to put an end to war. Women, we need your wisdom, your spirit, to get us all back on the right path.
