Canine Good Citizen certification offered

The Canine Good Citizen is a certification awarded by the American Kennel Club to all dogs who pass a 10-part test of basic good manners and whose owners sign a pledge of responsible dog ownership. The certification program has been formally endorsed in 24 states, including Colorado, and has been applied in a number of countries, including Japan, England, Australia and others. Some insurance companies that exclude owners of certain breeds of dog from homeowners coverage make exceptions for dogs who are CGC certified.Because Sept. 12 is AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Day, the test will be offered to all dogs at High Tails Dog & Cat Outfitters in West Glenwood Springs from 6-8 p.m. The AKC will award a certificate to all dogs passing the test, which will be given by Laura Wright-Smith, AKC evaluator. Dogs need not be purebred to earn the CGC certificate.Copies of the test are available at High Tails, open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. The test measures basic good manners and sociability, and does not require the precision of formal competition obedience exercises. All well-behaved dogs are encouraged to come. There is no charge for the test. The Roaring Fork Kennel Club, Colorado Animal Rescue and High Tails will provide information about local community pet resources, activities and club information the same day.
