Car crash kills one in Rifle

RIFLE ” Around 10 p.m. last night a one-vehicle accident claimed the life of a Rifle-area man.

The driver, 22-year-old Justin Davis, was arrested for vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, reckless driving and driving under revocation. Davis was treated for minor injuries at Grand River Medical Center and was taken into custody when he was released.

According to a press release from the Colorado State Patrol, 21-year-old man was riding in the front passenger seat and was killed. His name has yet to be released. Charlie Steerman, 22, was riding in the back seat and sustained serious injuries and was taken to Grand River Medical Center where he was expected to be released today.

All three men involved in the accident are from the Rifle area.

The accident occurred on County Road 294 just east of the Rifle city limits from East Seventh Street.

The 1992 Mazda that police believe Davis was driving, was traveling eastbound when it went off the right side of the roadway at a high rate of speed, The car hit a tree, spun around clockwise and stopped on its wheels facing south.

None of the occupants were wearing seat belts.

Colorado State Patrol is investigating the accident. Alcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors in the crash.
